Tracing the origins of American Music
The origins of American music are deeply rooted in the diverse culture, influences and historical events that shape the nation.
Out of the African American experience came a new language. Not one written on paper, but of rhythm, melody, and voice. Spirituals, Blues and Jazz were more than genres of music.
They were resistance, coping mechanisms and maps to freedom all disguised as songs.
The question is, did America make the music or did music make America?
To understand how music shaped the nation we must begin in the cotton fields.
On this musical journey, we will start in New Orleans travel through Mississippi Delta and then on to Memphis and Nashville.
We will leave the then out of south and on to the Midwestern cities of Chicago, Detroit’s Motown and ending up at Cleveland Ohio’s, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
